You might want to consider the following types of clothing for your next headshot photography session:

  • I would recommend you wear something that you feel comf0rtable and think you look good in.  Clothing appropriate for your profession, without ‘out-dressing’ your clients is something to consider– if you are one step above your client’s in terms of ‘dress-code’ you are probably in the right spot.
  • A dark suit (perhaps with pinstripes) with a nice shirt and tie is always a good choice for a professional clean look.  You can make it more casual by omitting the tie and leave the shirt undone.
  • You may also consider a shirt and vest, or perhaps just a dress shirt for a more business casual look.
  • I recommend dress shirts that are darker so the attention is focused on your face

I suggest you avoid the following clothes:

  • White dress shirts unless they are under a darker suit (even then, I prefer a darker dress shirt)
  • worn, baggy, or fading clothing
  • T-shirts
  • Turtlenecks or sweaters (unless you have a tight thin sweater)
  • Busy pattens like checks, plaids or paisleys
  • Short sleeved shirts of any kind
  • Light coloured dress jackets (light blue, brown etc)

A successful headshot photography session will be great enhanced by a good selection of clothing.  I usually recommend my clients bring several different clothing items to allow us some options during the headshot session.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

You might want to consider the following types of clothing for your next headshot photography session:

  • Always start with something you like and think you look good in; your clothing should match the look and feel of the image you are seeking.  Clothing appropriate for your profession, without ‘out-dressing’ your clients is something to consider– if you are one step above your client’s in terms of ‘dress-code’ you are probably in the right spot.
  • Darker clothes tend to work better because they clearly accentuate your face, which is important because many business headshots are used in small spaces like business cards.
  • A dark suit for more business-like headshots, or an button up, open collar shirt, or shirt and vest, or shirt and cardigan for a more business/casual look.
  • Darker colours could  include black, grey, charcoal, wine/burgundy, navy, green, and brown (attractive hues of course)

You should consider avoiding the following types of clothing:

  • Clothing with lots of patterns
  • White shirts (unless they are under a darker suit)
  • Short sleeved shirts, or shirts with no sleeves (unless you have very slender arms)
  • Turtlenecks
  • Sweaters or any other bulky fabric
  • T-shirts or other casual wear
  • Tired, bulky, or faded clothing
